Articles submitted to JLD should not be under consideration by any other journal, or have been published elsewhere. Online submissions need to be accompanied by the Author's Publication Agreement.

Examples of manuscripts that would be considered appropriate for submission include:
- Applied and action research in the field of learning design
- Reviews of the literature
- Position papers intended to stimulate critical discussion
- Reports of best practices and innovation which are grounded in research
- Reports of basic research with direct, well-specified implications for practice
