Vol. 1, No. 1: Launch 2005
The new Journal of Learning Design (JLD) was launched on the 13th of July at Queensland University of Technology. The launch was opened by Dr. Neil Carrington, Director of the Teaching and Learning Support Services (TALSS) at QUT which hosted the launch. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Erica McWilliam, Asst. Dean of Research, Faculty of Education and the site officially opened by; Mr. Tom Cochrane, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Technology, Information and Learning Support) at the Queensland University of Technology. Prof. Ron Oliver, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries at Edith Cowan Universitywas a virtual guest at the launch who offered his congratulations for the success of the fist issue.
JLD also received its ISSN:1832-8342 as a new international online, open access journal to support scholarly research and dissemination of best practice in the field of learning design. It is also registered and archived with the National Library of Australia and DEST (Department of Education, Science and Training).
The aim of this new journal is to provide a forum for critical debate and professional exchange about how to move beyond transmission models of education to the design to more active, collaborative, authentic and engaging learning experiences for learners. The JLD is the brainchild of Meredith Godat, a Learning Designer in TALSS, who joined forces with Allison Brown to establish the journal. It has the support of renowned researchers and practitioners in the field such as David Jonassen, Tony Bates, Ron Oliver and many others, all of whom have accepted membership into the international panel and editorial board of the JLD. Meredith collaborated closely with QUT library colleagues Denise Frost, Paula Callan and Margaret Robinson to ensure that the QUT E-prints and Creative Commons facilities are included in the journal as a key feature. This is a great example of close working relationships being forged between TALSS and the library to achieve excellence in service for our mutual clientele.
